Visit Hull BS-AC At the Hull Maritime Festival Saturday 6th, Sunday 7th September 2008

Join Hull BS-AC at the Maritime Festival this year!
We need your support in promoting the fantastic diving on the East Yorkshire Coast, the club training programme and membership opportunities!

We will be there (near to the old Pepe’s nightclub) from 11am – 4pm so pop by.

The festival programme looks great this year with maritime history events, demonstrations and of course sea shanty singing! (I think there will be some beer quaffing taking place too!)

Gill and Tony will be posing in their wetsuits whilst Chris and Ian show off their photography!

If you want to help us staff the stall (even for 5mins to give us a loo break!) or have brass, photos or other dive artifacts to display then see me at the club, or just drop by at the weekend.

Always wanted to learn to dive?

Just visit our stand at the Hull Maritime Festival (details above). There will be lots to see and plenty of experienced divers for you to chat with so why not pop in and see us?

Great White Shark in the North Sea.

The Sun reported  "Jaws ate seal off Norfolk", the BBC said  "Seal was bitten by great white", EDP24  said "Seal bitten by Great White Shark". looks like the media have made their minds up then!

The Shark Trust referred to these articles as alarmist but add "that is not to say they cannot occur here."

It is interesting that there are many species of shark in the North Sea including Blue Sharks and Threshers but I have only ever seen one big shark in UK waters and that was a harmless Basking Shark.

The relevant articles are here on this link  Make your own mind up.
(Thanks Jo/Tony)

Whats happening in the BSAC world?

You may also like to try the search facility  at the top of the column to the right. This provides you with a tool to discover what is in the other 116 pages of this site.

St Abbs trip. September,  2007.

A very successful trip. That's what the feedback I have received says and its no surprise. When our lot get away together we generally make the best of it and this trip was no exception. Our party of 16 included the two youngest members of the club, Freddie Sibley-Calder (15) and Joseph Hodge (14). There were a couple of over 60's too.  In all we did about 75 individual dives. Go here to read about it.  More pictures to come in a few days.

Mask Squeeze

Photo of Marcy showing Mask Squeeze.

The effect of a Mask squeeze can be worrying for the victim and the "Count Dracula" look can be pretty scary for onlookers too. Back in February, 2004 an article appeared here showing a mask squeeze.  Since then the article has been widely used in training and has also helped reassure affected divers.

It is very rare for a diver to actually send in a photograph. Well a few days ago thats what Marcy from Chicago did. Marcy wrote:-

"Thanks for your article! It has put my mind at ease. I hadn't been diving in 3 or 4 years and sure enough, I was too preoccupied with my rental BC that I didn't realize that my mask was too tight. My Florida dive buddies reassured me that it was nothing to worry about, but now that I'm back in Chicago, all the strange looks I get has made me a bit nervous."

Thanks Marcy.

Warren on ladder

Some photographs taken by Warren Stevenson in the late 1950's / early 60's have been added to the "Oldies" gallery. Warren along with Reg Thompson, Brian "Chick" Verity, Garth Daddy and a few others is a founder member of the "Hull Frogmans Club", the club to which our club owes its roots. These guys dived with modified gas regulators and any old cylinder they could find! There is more to come on this subject.
